SEGOVIA

Segovia is a Castilian city of roughly 51,000 people, Roman in origin and famed for its UNESCO-listed Old Town and soaring 1st–2nd-century aqueduct. The compact centre climbs from arcaded Plaza Mayor to the late-Gothic cathedral, then out to the cliff-edge Alcázar, whose turrets overlook the Eresma valley and the Sierra de Guadarrama beyond. Classic viewpoints include the Mirador de la Pradera de San Marcos; local flavour runs to roast suckling pig (cochinillo) and hearty Castilian fare. Getting in is easy via high-speed trains from Madrid to Segovia-Guiomar (about half an hour) with buses into the old town, and most sights are walkable once you’re there.
