Ecatepec de Morelos is one of Mexico’s largest urban municipalities, a densely populated extension of greater Mexico City with about 1.65 million residents (2020 census) spread across 156 km². Founded as an Aztec altepetl—its Nahuatl name evokes the “hill of the wind,” linked to the god Ehecatl—it later entered national memory when independence hero José María Morelos was executed here in 1815; his former quarters now house the Museo Casa de Morelos. Today Ecatepec is known for sprawling neighbourhoods tied into the capital by Metro connections, the Mexibús BRT and the Mexicable aerial cableways, and for big retail like Multiplaza Aragón alongside parish churches and the Sagrado Corazón cathedral. For a quick historical anchor, start at Casa de Morelos; for moving around, the BRT and cable lines make cross-town hops far easier than they used to be.
