SCATTERGOOD GENERATING STATION

Scattergood Generating Station is a coastal LADWP power plant on the edge of Santa Monica Bay in Los Angeles, commissioned in 1958 and long fired by natural gas. It remains a stark piece of LA industrial architecture—stacked ducts, turbines and a control-room maze—and is now slated for a hydrogen-ready modernisation (new combined-cycle units capable of running on a natural-gas/green-hydrogen blend, with the EIR approved in 2025).

Judas Priest – “Painkiller” (1990)
The band shot the industrial interiors for the “Painkiller” video here, using the plant’s metallic corridors, mezzanines and machinery as the backdrop for Wayne Isham’s high-contrast, sparks-and-steam aesthetic. It’s one of the most recognisable heavy-metal videos tied to the site.

Megadeth – “Hangar 18” (1990/91)
The video was filmed inside LADWP’s Scattergood Generating Station on the Los Angeles coast, using its industrial corridors, catwalks and turbine halls as the setting for the alien-interrogation concept that mirrors the song’s lyrics. Directed by Paul Boyington, the clip cuts between the band performing in the plant and staged “specimen” scenes, with the cold, metallic look giving it that classic early-’90s sci-fi/industrial vibe.
