“From Earth to Black Sabbath” is a blue plaque in Workington, Cumbria. The heritage plaque at the Carnegie Theatre marks the night Ozzy Osbourne announced onstage that the band Earth would change its name to Black Sabbath. The announcement happened during an Earth gig at Banklands Youth Club on 26 August 1969—a moment local lore treats as the band’s “birth” under the Sabbath name. The plaque, crowdfunded by fans, was unveiled in March 2022 and has since become a small pilgrimage stop for heavy-music history buffs.
It’s on the Carnegie Theatre as the original Banklands Youth Club no longer exists—the site now houses a school—so the plaque was mounted at the Carnegie as a prominent, publicly accessible stand-in close to where the event took place.
