RIO DE JANEIRO

Rio de Janeiro is Brazil’s second-largest city, a Guanabara Bay metropolis of about 6.73 million people (metro around 12–13 million) founded in 1565 by Estácio de Sá and famed for dramatic “mountain-and-sea” scenery. Its UNESCO-listed Carioca landscape frames icons such as Christ the Redeemer on Corcovado, Sugarloaf Mountain, Copacabana and Ipanema beaches, and Tijuca National Park, while neighbourhood highlights range from Lapa’s arches and nightlife to hillside Santa Teresa and the Maracanã stadium. Getting in is via Galeão/Antonio Carlos Jobim (GIG) and centrally placed Santos Dumont (SDU), with metro, trams and buses covering most hops across the compact core.
