SAN SALVADOR

San Salvador is El Salvador’s capital, a metropolitan hub of about 530,000 in the municipality and roughly 2.4 million across the wider metro, founded by the Spanish in 1525 and moved to its present site in 1545 in the quake-prone “Valle de las Hamacas.” Highlights cluster in the historic centre—the Metropolitan Cathedral, the National Palace and the striking, concrete-arched Iglesia El Rosario—while nature is minutes away at El Boquerón on the San Salvador volcano rim; museums such as MARTE round out the picture. Practicalities are easy: El Salvador International Airport sits about 40–45 km south (roughly a 45-minute ride), with buses and ride-hailing covering local hops.
