Aberdeen is a port city on Scotland’s northeast coast in the United Kingdom, with about 232,000 people in the Aberdeen City council area. Set between the Rivers Dee and Don, it received city privileges in 1179 and later grew into one of Scotland’s major maritime, fishing and trading centres. The city is best known as the “Granite City” because of its grey stone architecture, and in modern times also became closely associated with the North Sea oil and energy industry. Key sights include the harbour area, Union Street, Marischal College, St Machar’s Cathedral, the beach and seafront, and the historic lanes of Old Aberdeen around the University of Aberdeen. The city also works as a gateway to Aberdeenshire’s castles, whisky country, the Cairngorms and ferry routes to Orkney and Shetland. Getting in and around is straightforward via Aberdeen Airport, Aberdeen railway station, local buses and road links along the A90.
