Ace of Spades is a live music venue in Sacramento, California. Located on R Street in the city’s R Street Corridor, it opened in February 2011 and has a capacity of around 1,000 people.
The venue was established by Sacramento promoters Eric Rushing and Bret Bair, who acquired the premises in 2010 and converted a former dance club into a dedicated concert venue. Rushing had previously spent around a decade promoting shows at The Boardwalk before opening Ace of Spades. In 2016, the venue was acquired by House of Blues Entertainment, part of Live Nation Entertainment.
Ace of Spades functions mainly as a standing-room concert venue, with most shows open to all ages unless otherwise listed. The room is relatively compact for its capacity, with the audience positioned close to the stage and several bar areas around the venue.
The booking profile is broad, but hard rock, punk, hardcore and metal have been regular parts of the programme since the venue’s early years. Bands that have played Ace of Spades include Mastodon, Machine Head, Cannibal Corpse, Behemoth, Trivium, Whitechapel and Six Feet Under. Machine Head have appeared there several times, while Cannibal Corpse played the venue in both 2019 and 2022.
Ace of Spades is also connected to Good Luck Lounge, a separate lounge space with its own bar and intimate stage. Together, the concert room, bars and adjoining lounge give the R Street address a larger role in Sacramento’s live music scene than a single-room club.
