Alcatraz Open Air is a heavy metal festival held in Kortrijk, Belgium. The festival started in 2008 and has grown into one of Belgium’s main metal festivals, with a distinctive prison-themed identity reflected in its artwork, mascot, stage names and festival area.
The festival was originally held in Deinze before moving to Kortrijk, where it now takes place at Sportcampus Lange Munte. Staged in early August, Alcatraz has developed from a smaller one-day event into a multi-day open-air festival with several stages, camping and a large international audience.
The programme covers a wide range of heavy music, including classic heavy metal, hard rock, thrash, death metal, black metal, doom, power metal, hardcore and modern metal. The festival site also includes food and merchandise markets, themed bars and chill areas, giving Alcatraz a full festival-village character alongside its prison concept and strongly genre-focused line-up.
