Alicante is a Mediterranean port city in the Valencian Community, Spain, with about 366,000 people and a long history shaped by Iberian, Roman, Islamic and later Castilian rule. Set on the Costa Blanca at the foot of Mount Benacantil, it is best known for Santa Bárbara Castle, which dominates the skyline above the old town, and for its mix of beaches, harbour life, palm-lined promenades and compact historic streets. Key sights include the castle, the Explanada de España, the Basilica of Santa María, the Co-Cathedral of San Nicolás, the MARQ Archaeological Museum, the central market and Postiguet Beach, which sits right below the old city. Alicante also works as a practical gateway to the wider Costa Blanca, with easy trips to beach towns, mountain villages and nearby Elche. Getting in and around is straightforward via Alicante-Elche Miguel Hernández Airport, the main railway station, local buses and the coastal tram network running north along the coast.
