Altadena is an unincorporated community in Los Angeles County, California, lying directly north of Pasadena at the foot of the San Gabriel Mountains. It had 42,846 residents at the 2020 census and developed largely during the late 19th century, with the community taking shape around the Woodbury brothers’ subdivision in the 1880s. Altadena is known for its mountain setting, historic residential neighbourhoods and Christmas Tree Lane, where a nearly mile-long avenue of deodar cedars has been illuminated each Christmas since 1920. Trails into the San Gabriel Mountains begin close to the community, including routes from the Cobb Estate towards Echo Mountain and the remains of the former Mount Lowe Railway. Altadena was devastated by the Eaton Fire in January 2025, which destroyed thousands of structures across the area, and rebuilding remains a major part of the community’s recent history. Altadena also has an unusual connection to heavy metal through Mountain View Cemetery, established in 1882, where parts of Ozzy Osbourne’s 2010 music video for “Life Won’t Wait” were filmed. The nearby Mountain View Mausoleum is also noted for its architecture and extensive use as a filming location.
