ARTmania Festival is a long-running rock and metal festival held in Sibiu, Romania. The festival was first staged in 2006 and is closely associated with Piața Mare, the Large Square in the medieval centre of the city.

The setting is one of ARTmania’s most distinctive features. The main concerts take place in the historic heart of Sibiu, surrounded by old buildings, cafés, streets and squares rather than on a remote festival field. This gives the festival a compact city-centre character, with concerts, cultural events and exhibitions taking place within walking distance of each other.

ARTmania’s programme has moved between progressive metal, gothic metal, alternative rock, doom metal, black metal, folk, post-metal and related styles. The festival has often combined heavier bands with more atmospheric, progressive and art-rock acts, giving it a broader identity than a standard extreme metal festival.

Artists who have played ARTmania include Dream Theater, Opeth, Nightwish, My Dying Bride, Within Temptation, Anathema, The Gathering, Lacuna Coil, Helloween, HIM, Apocalyptica, Devin Townsend, Serj Tankian, Die Toten Hosen, The Sisters of Mercy, Porcupine Tree, Emperor, Wardruna, Pain of Salvation, Samael, Haken, TesseracT, Vulture Industries, Korn, Igorrr, Spiritbox, Satyricon, Extreme, Sivert Høyem and Sylvaine.

ARTmania has also included exhibitions, film screenings, talks and other cultural events alongside the concerts. This wider programme reflects the festival’s original art-and-music concept, placing heavy music within the broader cultural setting of Sibiu.

The festival is usually built around a compact summer format in the city centre rather than a large camping-based outdoor site. Its combination of rock and metal bookings, historic square setting and cultural side programme has made ARTmania one of Romania’s most recognisable festivals for heavier and alternative music.
