AUSTRIA

Austria’s heavy metal history may not be as internationally recognised as that of its neighbours, but the country has cultivated a diverse and passionate scene since the 1980s. Rooted in Vienna, Graz, and Innsbruck, the early Austrian metal movement drew inspiration from both the traditional heavy metal of Judas Priest and Iron Maiden, and the emerging extreme sounds from Germany and Scandinavia.

One of the earliest Austrian metal exports was Speed Limit, blending hard rock and melodic heavy metal, while the underground gravitated toward more aggressive acts like Disharmonic Orchestra and Pungent Stench in the late 1980s. Both bands became cult favourites in the death metal and grindcore worlds, with Pungent Stench’s provocative imagery and lyrics pushing boundaries and sparking controversy.

The 1990s saw Austria gain notoriety in the black metal underground through Abigor, whose intricate and atmospheric style stood apart from the Norwegian wave, and Golden Dawn, known for its avant-garde approach. Meanwhile, symphonic and gothic metal found a home in bands such as Visions of Atlantis and Serenity, giving Austria a presence in the European power metal scene.

While Austria does not host massive global metal festivals like Wacken or Hellfest, it has a thriving live circuit with events such as Metal on the Hill in Graz and Kaltenbach Open Air, attracting both local talent and international acts.
