Vienna is Austria’s capital, a Danube-side city of about 2.03 million people (early 2025) that grew from Celtic and Roman roots (Vindobona) into the seat of the Habsburg Empire and one of Europe’s classic “imperial” cities. It’s best known for its UNESCO-listed historic centre and Ringstrasse grandeur—think Hofburg, St Stephen’s Cathedral and the State Opera—alongside palace-scale sights such as Schönbrunn and the Belvedere, and a music legacy tied to Mozart, Beethoven and the waltz era. Between museum districts, coffeehouses and markets like the Naschmarkt, the city also delivers big green escapes via the Prater and the Vienna Woods. Getting around is easy on the dense U-Bahn, tram and S-Bahn network, and Vienna Hauptbahnhof and Vienna International Airport (VIE) make it a straightforward base for the rest of Central Europe.
