Ayia Napa is a coastal resort town in southeastern Cyprus, with a permanent population of only a few thousand people but a much larger summer-season crowd. Its roots are tied to the medieval Ayia Napa Monastery, built around a cave and icon tradition, while the modern town grew from a small fishing village into one of Cyprus’s best-known beach and nightlife destinations in the late 20th century. It is best known for Nissi Beach, Makronissos Beach, the harbour, beach clubs, late bars and summer party culture, but the area also has quieter natural sights such as Cape Greco, the sea caves and coastal walking routes. The centre is compact, with restaurants, hotels, shops and nightlife clustered around the main square and harbour area. Getting in and around is straightforward by road and intercity bus from Larnaca, Protaras and Nicosia, with Larnaca International Airport the nearest major gateway.
