Ballymena is a County Antrim town in Northern Ireland with about 31,000 people, set on the River Braid around 28 miles north-west of Belfast. Its recorded roots reach back to early Christian settlement, while the modern market town developed strongly after land was granted to the Adair family in 1626, including rights to hold fairs and a Saturday market. Today Ballymena is best known as a regional shopping and service hub for Mid and East Antrim, with a compact centre around the Tower Centre, the Braid arts centre and the old town hall. Nearby countryside adds easy escapes, from Slemish Mountain—traditionally linked to St Patrick—to the villages and glens of County Antrim. Getting in and around is straightforward by rail and road, with trains to Belfast and Derry/Londonderry and quick access to the A26 and A42 corridors.
