Bangers Open Air is an annual heavy metal festival held at Memorial da América Latina in São Paulo, Brazil. Established in 2023 as the Brazilian edition of Germany’s Summer Breeze Open Air, it operated as Summer Breeze Brasil for its first two editions before adopting the Bangers Open Air name in 2025. The programme covers a broad range of heavy music, including traditional heavy metal, power, death, black, thrash, doom, progressive metal, hard rock, metalcore and hardcore, with major international touring artists appearing alongside established and emerging Brazilian bands.
The first edition took place on 29 and 30 April 2023 and marked the first expansion of Summer Breeze to South America. More than 40 bands performed across four stages at Memorial da América Latina, including Blind Guardian, Kreator, Testament, Stone Temple Pilots, Skid Row, Parkway Drive, Finntroll, Benediction, Vixen, Napalm Death, Accept and Stratovarius. The Brazilian production was developed together with the team behind the original Summer Breeze Open Air in Dinkelsbühl, adapting elements of the European festival to an urban setting in São Paulo.
The festival expanded to three days for its second edition, held from 26 to 28 April 2024. The programme included Mercyful Fate, Anthrax, Within Temptation, Killswitch Engage, HammerFall, Epica, Mr. Big and Sebastian Bach, alongside Carcass, Death Angel, Biohazard, Amorphis, Nervosa and many others. Several stages were spread around the Memorial complex together with merchandise, food, drink and other festival areas.
In September 2024, the organisers announced that the Brazilian event would leave the Summer Breeze name and continue independently as Bangers Open Air from 2025. The first edition under the new name was therefore effectively the third year of the same festival. Held from 2 to 4 May 2025, it featured Sabaton, Powerwolf, W.A.S.P., Avantasia, Kerry King, Kamelot, Paradise Lost, Doro, Armored Saint, Destruction, Municipal Waste, Nile and Viper among a large multi-stage line-up.
Bangers Open Air returned to a two-day format on 25 and 26 April 2026. The line-up included Twisted Sister, Arch Enemy, In Flames, Within Temptation, Black Label Society, Killswitch Engage, Jinjer, Fear Factory, Primal Fear, Evergrey, Tankard, Onslaught, Crypta, Violator and Korzus. The festival has also expanded beyond the main weekend through official pre-parties and side shows in São Paulo and other Brazilian cities.
Memorial da América Latina has remained the festival’s home since its launch. Designed by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer and opened in 1989, the large cultural complex in the Barra Funda district provides open plazas, exhibition buildings and indoor spaces that can be incorporated into the festival site. Bangers Open Air currently uses four stages alongside merchandise, food and other festival areas. From its beginnings as an official Summer Breeze offshoot, the event has developed into one of Brazil’s largest recurring festivals dedicated to heavy metal.
