BELFAST

Belfast is Northern Ireland’s capital and largest city, with about 345,000 people in the council area and over 700,000 in the wider metropolitan area. Set on the River Lagan where it opens into Belfast Lough, it was chartered as a town in 1613 and grew into a major industrial city, especially known for linen production, shipbuilding and the Harland & Wolff shipyard where RMS Titanic was built. Today the city mixes Victorian architecture, political history, murals and modern waterfront development, with key stops including Titanic Belfast, Belfast City Hall, St George’s Market, the Cathedral Quarter, Crumlin Road Gaol and the Botanic Gardens. The city also has a strong pub, music and live-venue culture, with most central areas easy to cover on foot. Getting in and around is straightforward via Belfast International Airport, George Best Belfast City Airport, rail links to Dublin and Derry/Londonderry, and local buses and Glider routes across the city.
