Belgium’s heavy metal history began in the early 1980s, when the New Wave of British Heavy Metal inspired the first generation of Belgian metal acts. Bands like Killer, Acid, and Crossfire brought aggressive riffing and high-energy performances to the European underground scene.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Belgium developed a reputation for its extreme metal output. Death metal acts such as Agathocles pioneered grindcore and “mincecore,” while bands like Enthroned and Ancient Rites established Belgium as a respected force in black metal.
The 2000s saw Belgium expand its influence in modern metal, with Channel Zero becoming the country’s biggest metal export, combining thrash and groove metal elements. Aborted, formed in 1995, rose to international prominence as one of Europe’s leading brutal death metal bands.
Belgium is also home to important metal festivals, most notably Graspop Metal Meeting—one of Europe’s largest and most diverse metal events, attracting global headliners and underground favourites alike. Other notable festivals include Alcatraz Metal Fest and Metal Méan.
