BOLKÓW

Bolków is a small Lower Silesian town of about 4,900 people, granted town rights in 1276 and best known for its dramatic medieval castle rising above the rooftops. The town sits on the edge of the Sudetes foothills, roughly 70 km west of Wrocław, and works well as a base for exploring the castle-and-mountain scenery of this part of southwest Poland. The main sight is Bolków Castle, first mentioned in 1277 and developed in the late 13th–14th centuries by the Piast dukes of Świdnica–Jawor, with a distinctive wedge-shaped tower and wide views over the valley. The compact centre below is easy to cover on foot, with short walks up to the castle hill and simple day-trip access toward the Karkonosze region and towns like Jelenia Góra.
