Bordeaux is a major city in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, France, with about 268,000 people in the city and around 854,000 in Bordeaux Métropole. Set on the Garonne River, it grew from the Roman settlement of Burdigala into one of Europe’s great wine and trading cities, with a historic centre listed by UNESCO as “Bordeaux, Port of the Moon.” Key sights include Place de la Bourse and the Miroir d’eau, Bordeaux Cathedral, the Grand Théâtre, the riverside quays, the Cité du Vin and the old streets around Saint-Pierre and Chartrons. The city is best known for wine, 18th-century architecture, riverfront life and its role as a gateway to vineyards such as Médoc, Saint-Émilion and Graves. Getting in and around is straightforward via Bordeaux Airport, Bordeaux Saint-Jean railway station, trams, buses and walkable central districts.
