Bratislava is Slovakia’s capital and largest city, a Danube-side hub of about 475,000 people (metro around 700,000) with roots that stretch back to Celtic and Roman times and a medieval rise as Pressburg. It’s best known for its hilltop Bratislava Castle overlooking the river, the compact Old Town of baroque streets and squares, and its unique position on the borders of three countries—Slovakia, Austria and Hungary—putting Vienna less than an hour away. Highlights include St Martin’s Cathedral, the Michael’s Gate area, the riverside promenade, and the UFO observation deck on the SNP Bridge for skyline views. Getting in and around is straightforward via Bratislava’s main railway stations, frequent buses and trams, and two nearby airports: Bratislava (BTS) and Vienna (VIE), which is often the easiest international gateway.
