Bremen is a historic city-state in northwest Germany with about 570,000 people, founded as a bishopric in AD 787 and long defined by its role as a Hanseatic trading city on the River Weser. The compact centre is best known for its UNESCO-listed Town Hall and Roland statue on the Marktplatz, plus the fairy-tale “Town Musicians of Bremen” statue and the narrow Schnoor quarter of medieval lanes and tiny houses. Riverside Bremen stretches along the Schlachte promenade with bars and beer gardens, while modern culture includes the Universum science centre and a strong museum scene. Getting in and around is straightforward via Bremen Hauptbahnhof and Bremen Airport (BRE), which sits close to the centre with a direct tram link.
