BULGARIA

Heavy metal in Bulgaria began to emerge in the early 1980s, despite restrictions under the socialist regime. Bands like Signal and FSB, though more rooted in rock, paved the way for heavier sounds. By the mid-1980s, groups such as Era and Epizod incorporated heavy metal influences, while underground tape trading helped the genre spread among young fans.

After the fall of communism in 1989, Bulgaria’s metal scene grew rapidly, with bands like Epizod gaining popularity for blending traditional Bulgarian themes with metal. The 1990s also saw the rise of more extreme acts such as Hyperborea and Past Redemption, introducing death and thrash metal to the local scene.

Today, Sofia serves as the heart of Bulgarian metal, hosting international tours and festivals such as Kavarna Rock Fest (held in the nearby coastal town of Kavarna).
