Burgas is a major city on Bulgaria’s southern Black Sea coast, with about 195,000 people in the municipality and a history shaped by ancient coastal settlements, Roman-era fortifications and later port development. Today it is best known as one of Bulgaria’s main seaside and transport hubs, with a large harbour, busy summer tourism and easy access to beach resorts along the coast. Key sights include the long Sea Garden above the waterfront, the pier and central beach, the Regional Historical Museum, St Anastasia Island in the bay, and the nearby Burgas Lakes, including Atanasovsko Lake and the Poda bird reserve. The city also has a practical, lively centre with cafés, bars, shops and cultural events, especially in summer. Getting in and around is straightforward via Burgas Airport, the main railway and bus stations, local buses and road links north to Nessebar and Sunny Beach and south to Sozopol and the Strandzha region.
