Candelabrum Metal Fest is a heavy metal festival held at Velaria de la Feria in León, Guanajuato, Mexico. The festival was created by promoter Khezia Quintero and his team, with the first edition originally planned for 2020 before being postponed because of the COVID-19 pandemic. It finally took place on 2 and 3 September 2022.
The festival focuses on heavy metal, doom metal, death metal, black metal, thrash metal and other forms of underground and traditional metal. Its booking profile has emphasised international bands that rarely perform in Mexico, alongside Mexican acts and established names from the wider metal underground.
The first edition included Carcass, Candlemass, Overkill, Voivod, Cirith Ungol, Tribulation, Cadaver, Blood Incantation, Evoken, Midnight, Sigh, Moonspell, Sadistic Intent, Night Demon and Shining. Later lineups have continued in the same direction, with bands such as Paradise Lost, Immolation, Dark Tranquillity, Dismember, Exodus, Gorgoroth, Archgoat, Bell Witch, Pagan Altar, Sólstafir, Terrorizer, Bloodbath, Old Man’s Child, Destruction, Loudness, Aura Noir, The Haunted, Revenge, Warning and Ved Buens Ende.
Candelabrum takes place at Velaria de la Feria, a large roofed but open-sided structure within León’s fairground complex. The covered area gives the festival protection from sun and rain while retaining the feel of an outdoor event. The venue is more than 8,000 square metres and has become a central part of the festival’s identity.
The festival uses a single main stage, allowing the programme to run consecutively without overlapping performances. General admission and VIP areas are positioned in front of the same stage, with food, drink and seating areas further back in the venue.
With its covered arena setting, single-stage format and emphasis on cult, traditional and underground metal, Candelabrum Metal Fest has developed into one of Mexico’s most distinctive metal festivals.
