Cape Town is the legislative capital of South Africa and the largest city in the Western Cape, with about 4.77 million people in the metropolitan municipality. Set between Table Mountain, Table Bay and the Atlantic coast, it grew from the Dutch East India Company’s 1652 refreshment station into one of southern Africa’s most important ports and cultural centres. The city is best known for Table Mountain, the V&A Waterfront, Robben Island, beaches such as Camps Bay and Muizenberg, and its dramatic mix of mountain, ocean and urban neighbourhoods. Key sights include the cableway up Table Mountain, the colourful Bo-Kaap district, Kirstenbosch Botanical Garden, the Castle of Good Hope, District Six Museum and day trips to the Cape Peninsula and nearby Winelands. Getting in and around is straightforward via Cape Town International Airport, MyCiTi buses, taxis and rideshare, though the city is spread out and many visitors rely on cars for beaches, suburbs and longer excursions.
