Cartagena is a historic Mediterranean port city of roughly 220,000 people in the Murcia region of southeast Spain, founded as Qart Hadasht by the Carthaginians in 227 BC and later developed as the Roman Carthago Nova. It’s best known for its deep naval heritage and Roman-era sights, especially the well-preserved Roman Theatre and the layered old town that climbs from the waterfront. Highlights include the harbour promenade, the old fortifications and viewpoints above the city, plus museums focused on archaeology and maritime history. Cartagena is compact and walkable in the centre, with beaches and coves close by on the Costa Cálida, making it an easy base for coastal day trips.
