CHILE

Chile’s heavy metal story is deeply intertwined with its political history. Under Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship (1973–1990), censorship and repression made it difficult for rock and metal to flourish openly. Yet, the underground scene persisted, often in defiance of the regime. Bands like Rust emerged in the early 1980s, playing in small, hidden venues and trading cassette demos hand-to-hand.

By the mid-to-late 1980s, Chilean thrash metal began to take shape, heavily influenced by bands like Slayer, Kreator, and Metallica. Acts such as Pentagram Chile (one of the first death/thrash bands in Latin America) and Necrosis became pioneers, their raw and aggressive sound earning cult status worldwide.

With the return to democracy in 1990, the scene exploded. Larger venues, festivals, and international tours became possible. Bands like Criminal, founded by Pentagram’s Anton Reisenegger, brought Chilean thrash to a global audience. Meanwhile, Six Magics, Poema Arcanus, and Mar de Grises showcased Chile’s growing diversity, exploring power, doom, and progressive metal.

International bands frequently praise Chilean crowds for their energy — some even comparing Santiago to Buenos Aires for intensity. Festivals such as The Metal Fest Chile and Evil Confrontation now host both legendary acts and rising local talent.
