Colleville-sur-Mer is a small commune on the Normandy coast of France, with just over 200 residents. The village has medieval roots, reflected in the Church of Notre-Dame-de-l’Assomption, parts of which date from the 12th and 13th centuries, but Colleville-sur-Mer is best known for its central role in the history of D-Day. It overlooks Omaha Beach, where American forces landed on 6 June 1944, and is home to the Normandy American Cemetery and Memorial, where 9,389 American military personnel are buried. The nearby Overlord Museum covers the Normandy landings and subsequent campaign, making the area one of the main centres for exploring D-Day history. Colleville-sur-Mer also has an unusual connection to heavy metal: the rows of white grave markers at the American cemetery were used for the original cover of Scorpions’ 1977 album Taken by Force.
