Colombia’s heavy metal scene was born in the late 1970s and early 1980s, emerging in a country marked by political instability, economic struggles, and violence. This turbulent backdrop helped shape one of the most aggressive and passionate metal movements in Latin America. Early bands like Kraken from Medellín brought a melodic, hard rock–infused heavy metal sound, earning them mainstream popularity in Colombia and making them a national institution.
While Kraken dominated the more accessible side of metal, the underground in cities like Medellín and Bogotá was brewing something much darker. Inspired by Venom, Bathory, and Slayer, bands such as Parabellum, Blasfemia, and Reencarnación unleashed a raw and chaotic style in the mid-1980s that would later be recognised as proto–black metal. These early Colombian extreme metal recordings — noisy, lo-fi, and violent — are now considered cult treasures worldwide.
The violence in Medellín during the height of the drug wars created an environment where playing extreme metal was both a form of escape and rebellion. The city became infamous for its “ultra metal” movement, which prized speed, aggression, and unpolished production.
In the 1990s and 2000s, Colombian metal diversified. Death metal acts like Internal Suffering and Carnal brought international attention with relentless brutality, while folk-influenced bands like Apolo 7 and progressive groups such as Ethereal expanded the country’s sonic palette.
Today, Colombia hosts major metal events like Rock al Parque — one of the largest free rock and metal festivals in the world — drawing hundreds of thousands of fans each year.
