COPENHAGEN METAL FEST

Copenhagen Metal Fest is an annual heavy metal festival held at Amager Bio, BETA and ZeBU at Øresundsvej 6 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Established in 2019, the festival is devoted entirely to Danish bands and covers a wide range of metal and related heavy music, including death, black, thrash, doom, progressive metal, hardcore and experimental styles. The programme combines established names with newer and underground bands, giving the festival a strong focus on the Danish metal scene as a whole.

The first Copenhagen Metal Fest took place on 20 and 21 September 2019 and was originally created in connection with the 20th anniversary of Danish metal website Heavymetal.dk. Claus Westh Ljørring, Morten Kristensen and Rasmus Toftlund were among the principal organisers of the inaugural edition. Around two dozen Danish bands appeared across the three stages, including Artillery, Illdisposed, Bersærk, Livløs, Solbrud, Baest, Sunken, Psy:Code and Unseen Faith. The festival continued as an annual event, although the planned 2020 edition was cancelled during the COVID-19 pandemic. It returned in 2021 with a sold-out edition featuring MØL, Cabal, Iotunn, Saturnus, Solbrud and Defecto.

The festival uses three neighbouring stages at Amager Kulturpunkt. Amager Bio serves as the largest room and generally hosts the more established bands, while the smaller BETA and ZeBU stages are used for newer and more specialised acts. Food, merchandise and social areas are located around the courtyard connecting the venues, creating a compact festival site where all three stages are within a short walk of each other.

Talent development has remained an important part of Copenhagen Metal Fest, with a significant part of each programme reserved for newer bands performing alongside established artists. Bands appearing over the years have included Konvent, Mnemic, MØL, Strychnos, LLNN, Lifesick, Eyes, Afsky, HateSphere, Mercenary and Baest. By 2026, more than 140 different Danish bands had played during the festival’s first six editions.

Copenhagen Metal Fest expanded from two to three days in 2025, adding a Thursday programme ahead of the main Friday and Saturday events. The seventh edition takes place from 17 to 19 September 2026 with 29 concerts across Amager Bio, BETA and ZeBU. The line-up includes Baest, Afsky, Eyes, Danefae, Morild, Sacrificial, Speedslut, Heksproces, Feather Mountain and Shadowspawn alongside a large number of newer Danish bands. Its continued focus on domestic artists has made Copenhagen Metal Fest a recurring showcase for both the established Danish metal scene and its underground.
