Cortland is a small city in central New York State, with around 17,400 people. Incorporated as a city in 1900, it developed as the commercial and industrial centre of Cortland County, helped by the arrival of the railway and manufacturing during the 19th and early 20th centuries. The city is sometimes known as the “Crown City” because it lies where seven valleys meet, surrounded by the rolling landscape of central New York. Cortland is also home to SUNY Cortland, founded in 1868 as a teacher-training school and now one of the city’s largest institutions, giving the otherwise small city a noticeable student population. Downtown retains a number of historic commercial buildings, while the surrounding area offers easy access to hiking, lakes and the Finger Lakes region. Interstate 81 runs past Cortland, placing it roughly halfway between Syracuse and Binghamton and making it a straightforward stop when travelling through upstate New York. The city is known for where Ronnie James Dio, from Rainbow and Black Sabbath, grew up.
