Dallas is one of the largest cities in Texas, United States, with around 1.33 million people and forms the core of the much larger Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. Founded as a trading post on the Trinity River in 1841, the city expanded rapidly after the arrival of the railways in the late 19th century and later became a major centre for banking, oil, telecommunications and technology. Dallas is internationally associated with the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963, with Dealey Plaza and the Sixth Floor Museum among its best-known historic sites. Other landmarks include the Dallas Arts District, Reunion Tower, Fair Park and the lively Deep Ellum neighbourhood, which has been an important centre for blues, jazz, punk and alternative music since the early 20th century. Dallas also has a substantial heavy music history, producing bands including Drowning Pool and crossover thrash group Power Trip, formed in the city in 2008. The metropolitan area is extremely spread out, so many venues commonly described as being in Dallas are actually located in neighbouring cities such as Arlington, Irving and Grand Prairie.
