Dayton is a city in southwestern Ohio, United States, with around 137,000 people. Founded in 1796, it developed into an important manufacturing and engineering centre and became particularly associated with aviation. Brothers Wilbur and Orville Wright lived and worked in Dayton, where they operated their bicycle shop and developed much of the technology behind the world’s first successful powered aeroplane. Their legacy is preserved at several sites within Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park, including the Wright Cycle Company building and nearby Huffman Prairie Flying Field. The Dayton area is also home to the National Museum of the United States Air Force, the world’s largest military aviation museum, with more than 350 aircraft, missiles and other aerospace vehicles. Downtown Dayton sits along the Great Miami River and includes the Oregon District, a historic neighbourhood known for its restaurants, bars and nightlife.
