Ebbw Vale is the largest town and the administrative centre of Blaenau Gwent in South Wales, with a population of about 18,600, set at the head of the Ebbw Fawr valley on the Heads of the Valleys route (A465). Shaped by iron, coal and steel from the late 18th century onwards, it’s best known for the rise and closure of the vast Ebbw Vale steelworks, which dominated local life until it shut in 2002 and later became the focus of major regeneration at “The Works” site. For visitors, the town works as a practical base between industrial-heritage Wales and the outdoors: it’s close to the Brecon Beacons National Park boundary, has easy walks and viewpoints in the surrounding hills, and local culture hubs such as the Beaufort Theatre. Getting in is straightforward by road via the A465 and by rail on the Ebbw Valley line, with stations at Ebbw Vale Parkway and Ebbw Vale Town linking to Cardiff.
