Eisfeld is a small town in Thuringia, Germany, with about 7,500 people, set on the upper Werra River near the southern edge of the Thuringian Forest. First mentioned around 800 and recorded as a town by the early 14th century, it grew as a small regional centre on routes between Thuringia and Franconia. Today Eisfeld is best known as a quiet gateway to the Thuringian Forest, the Werra Valley and the Thuringian Porcelain Route, with a compact historic centre and countryside close on all sides. Key sights include Eisfeld Castle, now home to the Otto Ludwig Museum, the late-Gothic Dreifaltigkeitskirche St Nikolai, remnants of the old town fortifications and walking or cycling routes along the Werra and into the surrounding hills. Getting in and around is easiest by car via the A73/B89/B281 corridors, with regional rail and bus links toward Hildburghausen, Coburg and the wider southern Thuringia area.
