Espoo is Finland’s second-largest city, with around 329,000 people, forming part of the Helsinki metropolitan area immediately west of the capital. Although Espoo only gained city status in 1972, the area has been inhabited for thousands of years, with permanent villages established by the Middle Ages and Espoo Cathedral dating from the late 15th century. Unlike most large cities, Espoo has no single dominant centre, instead developing around districts such as Tapiola, Leppävaara, Matinkylä and Espoon keskus. It is known for its extensive forests, lakes and coastline, as well as the modernist garden city of Tapiola, the WeeGee Exhibition Centre and the nearby Nuuksio National Park. Espoo also has an important place in Finnish metal history as the home of Children of Bodom, formed there as Inearthed in 1993 and named after Lake Bodom, the site of one of Finland’s most notorious unsolved murder cases.
