Fenrir is a heavy metal bar and live music venue located at 222 Panyu Road in the Changning district of Shanghai, China. The bar was founded by Lloyd Huang, a former bartender at Inferno, one of Shanghai’s earliest dedicated heavy metal bars. Following several months of limited operation, Fenrir officially opened on 21 February 2025. Its name comes from Fenrir, the monstrous wolf of Norse mythology, and the Viking theme is reflected throughout the establishment.

Situated in the basement of the Gemdale Xinhuadao complex, Fenrir occupies a large open room with communal seating, a bar counter and a dedicated concert stage. The interior combines Viking-inspired decorations with traditional heavy metal imagery. Shields, helmets and replica weapons hang on the walls, while deer antlers have been incorporated into the lighting fixtures. Other decorations include guitars and customised motorcycles, reflecting the influence of Motörhead and biker culture. Drinks are sometimes served on miniature Viking longships.

Unlike some of Shanghai’s smaller metal bars, Fenrir has enough space to accommodate live bands rather than concentrating exclusively on DJ nights. The venue began hosting smaller performances during its initial months before developing a more regular concert programme. Among the bands featured at the venue are Blood of Life, Chimera Cult, Soulitude, Death Teach Me Life and Eviscerator. Concerts cover several styles of heavy music, including death metal, thrash metal, hardcore and more experimental genres.

In addition to live concerts, Fenrir organises themed DJ nights covering traditional heavy metal, extreme metal, punk, gothic rock and other alternative styles. The bar serves beer, spirits and cocktails, and also offers food and hookah. With its connection to the former Inferno bar and its emphasis on live performances, Fenrir has become part of Shanghai’s underground metal scene.
