FORTUNA

Fortuna is a small town and municipality in the Region of Murcia, southeastern Spain, with around 11,400 people. Its history reaches back to Iberian and Roman times, when the area was already known for the thermal springs that remain Fortuna’s most distinctive feature. The Romans developed baths here and visited the nearby Cueva Negra sanctuary, where Latin inscriptions painted on the rock walls have survived from antiquity. The thermal tradition continues at Balneario de Leana, built over ancient Roman baths and regarded as one of the oldest spa resorts in Spain. Fortuna itself contains the 18th-century Church of La Purísima and several historic buildings, while the surrounding landscape combines dry, almost desert-like terrain with palm groves, springs and protected areas such as the Ajauque and Rambla Salada wetlands and Sierra de la Pila. The town lies around 25 kilometres northeast of Murcia, making it easily accessible from the regional capital while retaining a much more rural character.
