Frankenstein Edinburgh is a horror-themed bar, restaurant and entertainment venue in Edinburgh, Scotland. Located on George IV Bridge in the Old Town, it is housed inside a large Gothic former church dating from 1857, previously known as The Elim Pentecostal Church. The setting gives the venue a naturally dramatic atmosphere, with high ceilings, church architecture and a layout that fits the Frankenstein theme unusually well.
The venue is spread across several levels, with the upper floor arranged like a gallery overlooking the main room below. This creates a strong view of the Frankenstein show, which takes place high up inside the former church at regular intervals. During the show, an animatronic Frankenstein’s monster rises from a table amid thunder, lightning effects, strobe lights and smoke, looks out towards the audience, and then lies back down again.
The horror theme is more playful and theatrical than genuinely dark, with a strong sense of fun, science fiction and classic monster-movie spectacle. A giant Frankenstein figure stands by the entrance, while figures of Frankenstein’s monster and the Bride of Frankenstein are placed together on the ground floor. Above the bar, two large screens show old black-and-white Frankenstein films, adding to the vintage monster-movie atmosphere.
The drinks menu follows the same theme, with cocktails such as The Monster, Goblet of Fireball, Corpsey Colada, Smokey Hide and The Black Death. The music is varied but fits the setting, with artists such as Rob Zombie and Rammstein appearing alongside songs like Michael Jackson’s “Thriller”.
Frankenstein Edinburgh also includes a German-style Bier Keller, giving the building a separate beer-cellar-style area in addition to the main bar spaces. Monster Karaoke is also down in the Bier Keller. The venue sells its own merchandise, including T-shirts and souvenirs connected to the bar. Together with its former church setting, theatrical monster show, old Frankenstein films, themed drinks and playful horror décor, it is one of Edinburgh’s most distinctive themed pubs.
