Freak Show is a rock’n’roll haunt in Essen-Steele with a cult funhouse aesthetic: you literally enter through a monster’s mouth, then find a bar and stage framed by giant teeth, horror props (Frankenstein’s lap, Freddy Krueger waving you out) and walls of posters. The programme ranges from 50s rock’n’roll/rockabilly and 60s soul/garage to 70s glam, hard rock, punk and heavy metal, with a steady rotation of DJ parties, karaoke and live bands; the bar originally opened in 2012 and typically runs doors at 20:00 on event nights. In warm weather they spin up a “Skeleton Bar” and small beer-garden setup out front, adding to the sideshow vibe.
