Fredrikstad is a historic city in Østfold, Norway, with about 86,000 people in the municipality, set where the Glomma river meets the Oslofjord. Founded by King Frederik II in 1567 after nearby Sarpsborg was burned during the Northern Seven Years’ War, it grew into an important fortified town and later a sawmill, shipping and industrial centre. Today Fredrikstad is best known for Gamlebyen, one of Northern Europe’s best-preserved fortified towns, with cobbled streets, old ramparts, cafés, galleries and small shops inside the star-shaped fortress. Key sights include the Old Town, Isegran, the ferry network across the river, the waterfront around Værste and the nearby Hvaler islands for coastal trips. The city also has a lively bar, venue and festival scene for its size, with most central areas easy to cover on foot or by free city ferry. Getting in and around is straightforward by train, bus and road, with Oslo about an hour away by rail.
