Gjøvik is a lakeside city in Innlandet, Norway, with about 31,000 people in the municipality, set on the western shore of Lake Mjøsa. It became a market town in 1861 and grew as an industrial centre around the Hunnselva river, with glassworks, manufacturing and inland trade shaping much of its modern history. Today Gjøvik is best known for its Mjøsa waterfront, student life through NTNU, and the Gjøvik Olympic Cavern Hall, an underground arena built for the 1994 Winter Olympics. Key sights include the lakeside promenade, Skibladner paddle steamer stops, Gjøvik Farm, the glassworks heritage around Hunnselva, and easy trips to Toten, Hamar and Lillehammer around the lake. Getting in and around is straightforward by train, bus and road, with rail links to Oslo and the wider Mjøsa region.
