Hangar 110 is an independent live music venue at Rua Rodolfo Miranda 110 in the Bom Retiro district of São Paulo, Brazil. Opened on 17 October 1998, it became particularly associated with punk, hardcore and alternative rock, while metal has also been an important part of the programme. The venue has a capacity of 640 people, with 600 on the main floor and a further 40 on the mezzanine. Its location close to Armênia metro station was deliberately chosen to make the club easily accessible by public transport, and concerts have traditionally finished before midnight.
Hangar 110 was founded by Cilmara and Marco Badin, the latter a former vocalist with São Paulo punk band Anarcólatras. The original idea was to create a broader underground cultural space for music, theatre and performance, but live music quickly became the main activity. The opening night featured Gritando HC, Imperpheitos and CPM 22. When Imperpheitos were delayed travelling from Santos, the then little-known CPM 22 became the first band ever to perform on the Hangar stage. From the beginning, the venue placed a strong emphasis on original Brazilian bands rather than cover acts, providing a permanent stage for the city’s growing independent scene.
Punk and hardcore remained central to Hangar 110’s identity, with artists such as The Exploited, GBH, Stiff Little Fingers, The Varukers, Discharge, Agnostic Front, CJ Ramone, Jello Biafra, Sick of It All and Ratos de Porão appearing over the years. The venue also played an important role in the development of Brazilian bands including CPM 22, Dead Fish, Hateen and Fresno, several of which became closely associated with Hangar 110 during the 2000s.
Metal also developed a strong presence in the programme. Cannibal Corpse and Krisiun appeared during the venue’s earlier years, while 2012 brought an especially heavy run of concerts featuring Obituary, Brujeria, Grave, Samael, Immolation, Incantation, Marduk, Absu, Inquisition, Exumer, Artillery, At the Gates, Nervosa and NervoChaos. Other metal bands and artists to perform at Hangar 110 have included Behemoth, Mayhem, Deicide, The Haunted, Amorphis, Warrel Dane, Tankard and Antestor. Together with the punk and hardcore programme, these shows established Hangar 110 as a regular stop for underground and extreme music in São Paulo.
After nineteen years of continuous operation, Hangar 110 closed at the end of 2017. The final concert on 23 December was performed by CPM 22, bringing the venue’s first chapter full circle with the same band that had opened its stage in 1998. The premises continued operating under the name The House, while Marco and Cilmara Badin organised concerts elsewhere through Hangar 110 Produções. In 2020, they reclaimed the original venue name, and Hangar 110 officially reopened on 1 March with a sold-out show featuring Gloria, Pense and Bad News Bad News.
Hangar 110 remains active at the same Bom Retiro address. By 2026, the venue reported having hosted more than 10,000 performances during its history, continuing to present international touring bands alongside Brazilian underground artists. More than two decades after opening, its combination of punk, hardcore, metal and long-term support for original bands has made Hangar 110 one of São Paulo’s most enduring independent venues for heavy and alternative music.
