HOI AN

Hoi An is a historic city on Vietnam’s central coast, with around 111,000 people in the former city area. Situated on the Thu Bon River, it developed into one of Southeast Asia’s most important international trading ports between the 15th and 19th centuries, attracting merchants from China, Japan, Southeast Asia and Europe. Its decline as a major port helped preserve the old centre, which today contains more than a thousand historic timber buildings, temples, merchants’ houses and assembly halls. Hoi An Ancient Town has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999, with landmarks including the Japanese Covered Bridge and the narrow streets running between the river and old market district. The city is also known for its lanterns, tailoring tradition and distinctive regional cuisine. Beaches such as An Bang lie only a few kilometres from the old town, while Da Nang is roughly 30 kilometres to the north.
