HOUSE OF MËMENTO MÖRI

House of Mëmento Möri is a Gothic rock bar at 6 Grape Lane in the old town of Whitby, England. Opened on 25 September 2026, it is operated by Matt Bedingham and Vincent Roberts, the team behind the Viking-themed Valhalla bar in York. The pair first viewed the property in January 2024 and spent more than two years developing the venue before opening.

The bar occupies a Grade II listed early 19th-century building on one of Whitby’s oldest streets. Before its conversion, the premises had been used as an ironmonger’s and later as a wood and DIY shop. Much of the historic character has been retained, including the old beams and multi-level layout, while the interior mixes Georgian and Gothic influences with dark wood panelling, leather furniture, chandeliers, fireplaces, old artwork and macabre decoration. Stone steps lead down into the basement, adding another layer to the building’s atmospheric layout.

Music is an important part of the concept, with Led Zeppelin, Motörhead and Iron Maiden named by the owners as representative of the soundtrack. The result is a bar that sits firmly on the rock and metal side of Whitby’s nightlife while still fitting naturally into the town’s wider Gothic identity. The drinks selection includes real ales, craft beer, cider, spirits and coffee, with live events and other activities also forming part of the venue’s plans.

The name comes from the Latin phrase “memento mori”, usually translated as “remember that you must die”. For the owners, the phrase is not simply a Gothic slogan but a reminder that time is limited and should be appreciated. In Whitby, with its long association with Bram Stoker’s “Dracula” and the Whitby Goth Weekend, the theme feels particularly at home.
