HOUSTON

Houston is the largest city in Texas, USA, with about 2.4 million people in the city and more than 7 million in the wider metro area. Founded in 1836 by brothers Augustus Chapman Allen and John Kirby Allen near Buffalo Bayou, it grew from a Gulf Coast trading town into one of the United States’ major energy, port, medical and space-industry centres. The city is best known for NASA’s Johnson Space Center, the huge Texas Medical Center, its oil-and-gas economy, and one of the most diverse food scenes in the country. Key sights include Space Center Houston, the Museum District, Buffalo Bayou Park, the Houston Zoo, the Menil Collection and the Downtown/Theater District area, while neighbourhoods such as Montrose, The Heights and East Downtown add bars, venues, record shops and nightlife. Getting in and around is straightforward via George Bush Intercontinental Airport, William P. Hobby Airport, METRORail, buses and major freeway links, though Houston is spread out and usually easiest to explore by car or rideshare.
