Iași is one of Romania’s major historic cities, with about 270,000 people in the city proper and over 400,000 in the metropolitan area. First recorded in the 14th century, it served for centuries as a capital of Moldavia and is often described as Romania’s cultural capital, with a strong university tradition and one of the country’s most important student populations. The main landmark is the Neo-Gothic Palace of Culture, which dominates the centre and houses several museums, while other highlights include the Metropolitan Cathedral, the richly decorated Three Hierarchs Monastery, Copou Park and the Botanical Garden. The city has a compact central axis along Ștefan cel Mare Boulevard, with churches, museums, cafés and bars close together, and it works as a practical base for exploring northeastern Romania and the wider Moldavia region.
