Illvastar, whose real name was Espen Seljeseth, played bass in the black metal band Svartahrid from 1996 to 2001. Although Svartahrid never became a very well-known band, Illvastar gained infamy in 2003 when he and three friends broke into a chapel, decapitated a corpse, and took the head with them. This act was carried out under the influence of ecstasy and alcohol. He got an 18 month sentence after being convicted for corpse desecration.

Illvastar passed away on December 26, 2017, at the age of 41. He was buried at Norde Gravlund Chapel in Skien on Friday, January 5, at 12:30 PM.
